Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 13 of 31)

Proverbs 13 — Theme: Hope grows where discipline lives

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 13:12

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick,

But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.”

Reflection

There’s a special kind of weariness that comes from waiting. You’re doing your best. You’re praying. You’re trying to be faithful. But the answer feels delayed, the breakthrough feels distant, and the “when?” starts to weigh on your heart.

God names that pain: hope deferred makes the heart sick. That’s real. And Scripture doesn’t shame you for feeling it.

But Proverbs 13 also gives you a promise: when the desire comes—when God brings the answer, the healing, the restoration, the provision—it becomes a tree of life. Not just relief, but renewal. Not just a moment, but a harvest.

Here’s the nightly encouragement: delay is not denial. In the waiting, God is often working in ways you can’t see—shaping your character, strengthening your faith, aligning timing, and preparing you to steward what you’re asking for.

So tonight, if you’re carrying disappointment, don’t carry it alone. Bring it to the Lord. Ask Him to heal the heart-sickness of waiting and to plant fresh hope in you again.

Prayer

Father, You know what I’ve been waiting on. You know where hope has been deferred and where my heart feels tired. Tonight I bring You my disappointment, my questions, and my longing. Strengthen me in the waiting. Guard me from bitterness and despair. Plant fresh hope in me and help me trust Your timing. And when You bring the answer, let it become a tree of life—bringing fruit, joy, and blessing that points back to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

Waiting doesn’t mean God is absent.

Before sleep, pray: “Lord, restore hope in me while I wait.”
