Scripture (John 19:30, NKJV)
“It is finished!”
Devotional
John 19 brings us to the cross. This moment may seem like an end, but it is truly the beginning of our hope. When Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” He wasn’t saying, “I’m done.” Instead, He was declaring, “The mission is accomplished.”
What Does 'Finished' Mean?
Finished means:
The price for sin was paid.
The debt we could never afford was covered.
The sacrifice God required was fulfilled.
The way back to the Father was opened.
This verse isn’t just for “religious people.” It’s a victory shout for anyone who knows they’ve needed mercy. If Jesus says it’s finished, then you don’t have to keep trying to earn what He already purchased.
Today, rest your heart in this truth: your salvation isn’t built on your performance. It’s built on Christ’s finished work. You don’t carry the cross; you carry gratitude.
Embracing the Finished Work
Understanding the significance of Jesus' declaration can transform our lives. It shifts our focus from striving to simply receiving. When we accept that everything necessary for our salvation has been accomplished, we find peace. This peace allows us to live freely, without the burden of guilt or shame.
The Power of Acceptance
Accepting this truth means letting go of the need to prove ourselves. It means trusting that God’s grace is sufficient. We can approach each day with a renewed sense of purpose. We can serve others, knowing we are already loved and accepted.
Practical Application
Pray this sentence slowly: “Jesus, I receive what You finished.”
If guilt tries to return, answer it with truth: “It is finished.”
Let your obedience today come from love—not pressure.
Living in Freedom
Living in the light of Christ’s finished work brings freedom. It frees us from the chains of performance-based acceptance. We can now focus on loving others and sharing the message of hope. This is the essence of our faith journey.
Sharing the Good News
As we embrace this truth, we are called to share it with others. We can encourage those around us to experience the same freedom. Let’s remind them that they don’t have to earn God’s love. They can simply receive it.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the cross. Thank You that You finished what I could never finish. Help me live today in freedom, humility, and gratitude. When I’m tempted to strive or carry shame, remind me that You have paid it all. Amen.
