Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 26 of 31)

Proverbs 26 — Theme: Don’t feed the fire

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 26:20

“Where there is no wood, the fire goes out;

And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.”

Reflection

Proverbs 26 speaks plainly about something that keeps conflict alive: adding fuel. Strife rarely survives on truth alone—it survives on repeated retelling, assumptions, side conversations, and stirring.

“A talebearer” isn’t just someone who lies. It can be someone who spreads, repeats, or amplifies what didn’t need to be carried further. And when that happens, relationships burn, trust erodes, and peace becomes harder to find.

God’s wisdom says: if you remove the wood, the fire dies. In other words: you may not be able to control everything others do, but you can control whether you contribute fuel. You can choose to stop repeating. Stop hinting. Stop venting to the wrong people. Stop keeping the conflict warm.

That doesn’t mean ignoring sin or avoiding hard conversations. It means handling things God’s way—direct, honest, humble, and private when possible. Peace grows when we stop feeding strife.

Tonight, ask the Lord to make you a peacemaker—someone who lowers the temperature, not raises it.

Prayer

Father, make me a person who promotes peace. Forgive me for any words that have fueled strife—through gossip, venting, repeating, or stirring. Give me wisdom to know what to say, what not to say, and who to talk to. Help me handle conflict in a godly way, with humility and truth. Let my mouth be an instrument of peace, and let strife cease where I have influence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

Before sleep, ask: “Have I added wood to any fire today?”

If yes, repent—and choose peace tomorrow.
