Jan 29,2026- Morning Devotional

Day 29 of 31 — John 5:6–7

Theme: When Jesus Confronts Our Excuses

Scripture (NKJV)

“When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’

The sick man answered Him, ‘Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.’”

Devotional

By Day 29, John has shown us miracles, conflict, authority, and grace—but here in John 5, Jesus slows everything down with a single question: “Do you want to be made well?”

At first, the question feels obvious. Of course the man wants to be healed—he’s been stuck for thirty-eight years. But Jesus isn’t asking about desire alone. He’s asking about readiness. Healing changes identity. It removes familiar patterns. It forces movement where there has been stillness.

The man doesn’t answer with a simple “yes.” He answers with a story—reasons, obstacles, comparisons, and disappointment.

“I have no man.”

“Someone always gets there first.”

His response sounds familiar because it mirrors our own hearts. We often explain our condition instead of surrendering it. We rehearse what hasn’t worked. We point to who didn’t help. And Jesus listens—but He doesn’t let the excuses have the final word.

This moment teaches us something important as the month draws to a close: Jesus meets us where we are, but He refuses to leave us where we’ve settled. He knows how long you’ve been stuck. He knows what you’ve tried. And still, He asks: Are you willing to step into something new if I call you forward?

Reflection

  • What has been your “I have no one” excuse?

  • Have you grown more comfortable explaining your situation than trusting Jesus to change it?

  • If Jesus asked you today, “Do you want to be made well?”—how would you honestly answer?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You see me completely. You know how long I’ve been carrying certain struggles and the reasons I’ve given for staying where I am. Today, I lay down my excuses and my explanations. I choose trust over familiarity and obedience over fear. Give me a willing heart to respond when You call me forward. In Jesus’ name, amen.
