Biblical Love vs. Cultural Love

Love Is Defined by the Cross

Scripture: 1 John 4:9–10 (NKJV)

“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

The clearest definition of love is not found in emotion, romance, or affirmation—it is found at the cross. God did not define love by words alone; He demonstrated it through sacrifice. Love was revealed when Jesus willingly laid down His life so that we could live.

Cultural love often avoids pain and sacrifice. Biblical love embraces them for the sake of redemption. The cross shows us that love is not about self-preservation, but self-giving. It is costly, intentional, and rooted in God’s grace.

When we look to the cross, every other definition of love falls short. As followers of Christ, we are called to let the cross shape how we love—sacrificially, faithfully, and without condition.

“Father, thank You for showing me true love through the cross. Shape my heart and my life to love as Christ loved me.”
