Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 10 of 31)

Proverbs 10 — Theme: Words build… or words break

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 10:19

“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,

But he who restrains his lips is wise.”

By the end of a long day, most regret doesn’t come from what we did—it comes from what we said. A sharp reply. A sarcastic comment. A vent that went too far. A “truth” delivered without love.

Proverbs 10 is packed with contrasts—righteous and wicked, wise and foolish—but tonight’s verse hits home: more words often create more trouble. Not because words are evil, but because unchecked words reveal unchecked hearts.

Godly wisdom isn’t always the loudest voice in the room. Often, it’s the person who pauses. Who prays before responding. Who knows when silence is strength. Restraining your lips isn’t weakness—it’s self-control, and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit.

So tonight, do a quick inventory of your conversations today. If you spoke life—thank God. If you spoke too fast—bring it to Him. The Lord can redeem what you said, heal what was hurt, and teach you to speak with grace tomorrow.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times my words were careless, impatient, or sharp. Cleanse my heart, because I know my mouth follows what fills me. Teach me to restrain my lips and to speak with wisdom, truth, and love. Help me be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Where my words caused damage today, give me humility to make it right. Let my speech tomorrow be a fountain of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

Before you speak tomorrow, pause and ask: “Will this build up or tear down?”
