Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 16 of 31)

Proverbs 16 — Theme: Let God steer what you can’t control

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 16:9

“A man’s heart plans his way,

But the Lord directs his steps.”

Most of us are planners by nature. We want timelines, clarity, and control. We make lists, map routes, set goals, and try to anticipate every “what if.” Planning isn’t the problem—Proverbs 16 actually assumes you’ll plan. The difference is who gets the final say.

“A man’s heart plans his way…” — that’s you making responsible decisions.

“…but the Lord directs his steps.” — that’s God shaping the outcome.

Sometimes God redirects you through closed doors. Sometimes through delays. Sometimes through unexpected opportunities. And sometimes through a quiet nudge that says, “Not that… this way.”

Tonight, if you feel frustrated because things didn’t go as planned, you’re not alone. But you’re also not lost. You may be rerouted—not rejected. God directs steps because He sees what you can’t see: the danger ahead, the better timing, the person you’ll impact, the lesson you need, the blessing you’re being prepared to carry.

So rest tonight with this truth: God isn’t scrambling to fix your future. He’s already there. Your job is faithfulness. His job is direction.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You direct my steps. I bring You my plans, my goals, and the things I’m trying to figure out. Help me surrender control without becoming careless. Give me wisdom to plan well and humility to follow when You redirect me. If I’m facing delays or closed doors, give me peace and discernment. Lead me in the path that honors You, protects me, and blesses others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

Before you sleep, release tomorrow’s pressure with one sentence:

“Lord, I trust You to direct my steps.”
