Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 22 of 31)

Proverbs 22 — Theme: Your steps follow what your heart loves

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 22:6

“Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Proverbs 22:6 is often quoted, but it’s deeper than a parenting slogan. “Train up” carries the idea of dedication—to set someone on a path, to shape patterns early, to point them toward what is right and life-giving.

And it’s not only about what you teach with words—it’s what you model with your life. Kids learn what we celebrate, what we prioritize, how we handle conflict, what we do with our time, how we talk about God, how we treat people, and what we do when we mess up.

This proverb is both encouragement and responsibility: what you pour in now becomes a compass later. It doesn’t mean every child will be perfect or never wander, but it does mean godly training plants truth that the Spirit can water for a lifetime.

Tonight, if you’re a parent, mentor, or leader: don’t underestimate your daily influence. Small prayers, consistent example, church faithfulness, Scripture at home, repentance when you’re wrong—those are seeds.

And if you feel like you’ve fallen short, remember: God restores. He redeems families. He can reach hearts you can’t. Keep sowing good seed.

Prayer

Father, help me train and lead with wisdom. Give me patience, consistency, and love. Let my life model Christ—not just my words. Where I’ve failed, forgive me and teach me to start again. I pray for the children and young people in my life: draw them to Jesus, guard them from evil, and plant Your truth deep in their hearts. Make my home a place where Your presence is welcomed and Your Word is honored. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

You don’t have to do everything—just be faithful in the next seed you plant.
