1 John — Chapter 2 (Devotional)

Key Scripture (NKJV

“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” — 1 John 2:1

“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” — 1 John 2:6

1 John 2 holds two truths together that every believer needs: holiness and hope.

First, John is clear: God’s desire is that we do not sin. Grace is never permission to stay the same. Following Jesus means learning obedience—letting His Word reshape our choices, habits, and attitudes.

But John is just as clear about what happens when we fail: we have an Advocate. That word means Jesus stands for you—He represents you before the Father. Not because you earned it, but because He is righteous and His sacrifice is sufficient. So when you stumble, the answer isn’t hiding—it’s returning.

Then John gives the proof of real faith: not talk, not labels, but walking like Jesus walked. If we claim to “abide,” our life should start to resemble His—humility, truth, compassion, purity, and love.

And John warns us about what competes with that: the love of the world. The world offers cravings, pride, status, and quick pleasure—but it doesn’t last. The will of God does.

So today, hold both truths:

  • Pursue holiness.

  • Rest in your Advocate.

And keep walking—one obedient step at a time.

Practical application

  • Ask: Where am I excusing what Jesus is confronting?

  • Confess quickly, then get back up—no shame loop.

  • Choose one “walk like Jesus” action today: forgive, serve, speak truth, resist temptation.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You that You are my Advocate. Help me not to make peace with sin. Teach me to abide in You and walk as You walked. Keep my heart from loving the world more than You. Strengthen me to obey with joy. Amen.
