Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 23 of 31)

Proverbs 23 — Theme: Don’t trade your soul for a moment

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 23:4–5

“Do not overwork to be rich;

Because of your own understanding, cease!

Will you set your eyes on that which is not?

For riches certainly make themselves wings;

They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.”

Reflection

Proverbs 23 speaks to a tired heart that’s been chasing—chasing money, approval, success, security, “enough.” And God interrupts that chase with mercy: cease.

Not because work is bad, but because worshiping wealth is. Riches can disappear fast. The promotion can change. The market can shift. The applause can fade. If your peace is tied to what can fly away, your heart will always feel unsettled.

Tonight, God is calling you back to what lasts. Your value isn’t measured by your output. Your security isn’t built on your grind. Your life is hidden with Christ, and His care doesn’t expire.

So let your soul breathe. Lay down the pressure to prove yourself. Ask God to realign your hunger so you pursue Him first—then you’ll handle money, work, and provision with wisdom instead of anxiety.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for overworking, over-worrying, or chasing what can’t satisfy. Help me cease striving and trust You as my Provider. Set my heart on what is eternal. Give me contentment, discipline, and wisdom with finances and priorities. Teach me to work faithfully—but rest confidently in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

If it can fly away, it can’t be your foundation.

Rest in the God who doesn’t change.
