Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 30 of 31)

Proverbs 30 — Theme: Give me what I can steward

Scripture (NKJV)

Proverbs 30:8–9

“Remove falsehood and lies far from me;

Give me neither poverty nor riches—

Feed me with the food allotted to me;

Lest I be full and deny You,

And say, ‘Who is the Lord?’

Or lest I be poor and steal,

And profane the name of my God.”

Reflection

Proverbs 30 is one of the most honest prayers in the Bible. It’s not showy. It’s not greedy. It’s a prayer for a steady heart.

The writer asks for two things:

  1. A clean life: “Remove falsehood and lies far from me.”

    Because deception—whether spoken or lived—always erodes integrity.

  2. A balanced provision: “Give me neither poverty nor riches… feed me with the food allotted to me.”

    This isn’t a lack of ambition. It’s spiritual maturity that says:

    “Lord, don’t give me more than I can handle and don’t give me less than I need.”

He even explains why:

  • If he becomes full, he might grow proud and forget God.

  • If he becomes desperate, he might compromise and dishonor God.

That’s a powerful nightly check for us. We don’t just need more—we need faithfulness. We need contentment. We need provision we can steward without drifting from the Lord.

Tonight, this is a prayer you can pray with confidence:

“God, keep my heart close. Provide what I can handle. And protect me from the temptations that come with both plenty and lack.”

Prayer

Father, remove falsehood and lies from my life—anything that pulls me away from truth. And Lord, provide for me in a way that keeps my heart near You. Guard me from pride when I have plenty and from desperation when I feel lack. Teach me contentment, gratitude, and faithful stewardship. Feed me with what You know is best for me, and let my life honor Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Takeaway for Tonight

The goal isn’t more. The goal is faithfulness.

Before sleep, pray: “Lord, give me what I can steward.”
