Nightly Devotional — Proverbs (Day 9 of 31)
Scripture (NKJV)
Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Proverbs 9 paints a picture of two invitations. One is wisdom—steady, holy, life-giving. The other is foolishness—loud, enticing, and empty. Both call out. Both offer a “seat.” But only one table leads to life.
Tonight’s verse tells us where wisdom truly begins: the fear of the Lord—a reverent awe that says, “God, You are God, and I’m not.” It’s not terror; it’s surrender. It’s choosing God’s ways over your impulses. It’s honoring Him even when no one is watching.
And then it says “knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” That means wisdom isn’t just learning facts—it’s knowing God. The closer you walk with Him, the clearer life becomes. Not because everything gets easy, but because you’re finally grounded in what’s true.
So tonight, take inventory: Which voice has been loudest lately? Wisdom or impulse? The Spirit or the flesh? Peace or pressure? You can choose again right now. God’s invitation is still open.
Holy God, I honor You tonight. Teach me the fear of the Lord—the reverence that produces obedience and the humility that produces wisdom. Help me to know You more deeply, not just about You. If I’ve been drawn toward foolish paths, pull me back with Your mercy. Give me discernment to recognize the voices competing for my attention and the courage to choose what leads to life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Takeaway for Tonight
Before sleep, whisper: “Lord, I choose Your wisdom over my impulses.”
